What is Firmware?

In Android, firmware refers to the compressed package that contains all the files, programs including radio and recovery image files, apps and the entire files necessary to run Android OS on the device hardware. Firmware is also sometimes referred to as flash files and it usually comes in two (2) flavours namely; Stock Firmware and Custom Firmware and any of or both can be flashed on Android device for which it is made.
Depending on the firmware that is used, firmware can either upgrade or downgrade the device OS.

What is Stock Firmware?

Stock Firmware are the officially released firmware package containing all the partitions of the phone. Stock firmware contains files and code needed to boot the device up and run its designed OS on it. Stock firmware also contains the GUI (graphical user interface), other required and useful applications, support files for those applications along with all other files required to run the OS on the device.

What is Custom Firmware?

Custom Firmware are the unofficial releases of firmware package developed and made available for the device by an individual or a group of people. Custom firmware usually contains only the important partitions of the phone and mostly relies on the phone's offial images such as the boot image, kernel among others in order for it to function properlly.

What is Flashing?

Flashing is the process of reverting the device, Oppo F9 to its factory default settings by means of flashing firmware on it. The firmware could be stock firmware or custom firmware. Mostly, flashing is done to correct any software malfunctions experienced on the device. Even those that seem persistence after performing a Factory-Reset are mostly corrected by flashing the device.

When Does it Become Necessary to Flash?

1. When there is need for you to upgrade or downgrade the device. 2. If you have forgotten the password or passcode to unlock the device. 3. If the device does not boot pass the welcome screen. 4. When the device is stuck at boot screen. 5. If the device reboots incessantly. 6. White screen displays that is not connected to the device's screen (hardware) issues can be corrected by flashing.
Generally, any software malfunctions observed on the device warrants flashing the device.

How to Flash Android Device?

You can flash firmware on any Android device not only Oppo F9 using several computer software programs most of which we have already discussed in separate pages. Meanwhile, it should be noted that, depending on the device chipset; different software programs are required to flash different Android devices.

How to Flash Stock ROM On Oppo F9

  1. To flash stock ROM on Oppo F9 using SP Flash Tool, first, Download SP Flash Tool here. You may see the installation instructions on the same page.
  2. Now, download USB VCOM drivers from here. Also, see the USB VCOM drivers installation instructions on the page.
  3. Then, download Oppo F9 firmware here. NOTE: Skip this if you have downloaded the firmware earlier.
  4. Extract the firmware you downloaded from step 3 above onto a folder on your PC.
  5. Now, RUN (Launch) SP Flash Tool on your PC.

  6. Click the Download tab. If it's on Download tab by default, proceed below.

  7. Once SP Flash Tool GUI is loaded and you're on the Download Tab, click Scatter Loading.

  8. Now, navigate to the folder where the flash file is saved and select your scatter-file.

  9. Select Download from the options.

  10. Mark all the firmware partitions loaded except the Preloader, cache and the Userdata.

  11. Click Download.

  12. Now, Power off the device or remove battery from it; whichever is possible.
  13. Finally, connect the device to your PC and tap the Power button just once.
  14. Now, watch SP Flash Tool progress bar until it completes the whole operations.
  15. Once done, the device may reboot. You may then disconnect the device from the PC. NOTE: if the device does not reboot once done, just disconnect the device, remove the battery, re-insert the battery and power-on the device.
  16. Succeeded! You have just succeeded at flashing your Oppo F9 using SP Flash Tool.
